"Queenstown, Ireland 11 April 1912. As the tenders "America" and "Ireland" returned to port the great ships voice spoke three times and echoed through the surrounding hills. The anchor was hove up and the bronze wing propellers began to turn, slowly at first then faster as more coal was fed to the furnaces. With the American Flag flying from the main mast and the White Star Line emblem from the other, Titanic began her stately departure. A broad turn to starboard and she continued westward along the south coast. Around the ship a myriad of shrieking gulls searched for discards shot from the waste pipes. Gliding past the Fastnet some hours later her decks were almost deserted as most of the passengers sat down to dinner, some contemplating their New York arrival four days away..."
